Steel Cut Oats (Base Recipe)

Serves 4     adjust servings

Ingredients

  • 1 cup steel cut oats
  • 3 (Instant Pot) or 4 (slow cooker, stove-top) cups water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

After cooking

  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup (or more to taste).

Instructions

    Instant Pot

    1. Stir together the steel cut oats, water, vanilla extract and cinnamon.
    2. Cook on high pressure for 10 minutes, followed by natural pressure release (aka: unplug your Instant Pot).
    3. Remove lid and stir in the maple syrup.

    Slow Cooker:

    1. Spray the inside of your slow cooker with cooking spray or use a slow cooker liner.
    2. Stir together the steel cut oats, water, vanilla extract and cinnamon. Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours.
    3. Stir in the maple syrup.

    Stove Top:

    1. Heat water in a medium pot until boiling.
    2. Add the steel cut oats, vanilla extract and cinnamon, and bring to a boil.
    3. Reduce heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 25-35 minutes.
    4. Remove from heat and stir in the maple syrup.
