Learn how to freeze pesto into small portions perfect for pasta, sauces, pizza and more! With this quick and easy method you'll never waste pesto again!

Pesto is a classic flavor combination that I use often. I love a good basil pesto, but when I want to switch things up I love this pistachio mint pesto, or sneaky kale pesto. They all make excellent pasta sauces! Today I'm showing you how to never waste any version and how easy it is to pop it in the freezer!

8 How to Freeze Pesto

Basil grows in abundance during the warm months and freezing a quick batch of pesto is a great way to preserve a taste of summer! By combining olive oil, fresh basil, salt, cloves garlic, lemon juice and a few other basic ingredients into a food processor or blender you can have a flavorful sauce that is perfect for so many things!

I love throwing these pesto cubes in soups, salad dressings, using them as pizza sauce or for quick puff pasty breadsticks.

Reasons you'll ♡ this recipe

  • Takes up little room in the freezer. By freezing pesto in small portions no big jars or containers will need to be stored.
  • No waste. There is no reason for pesto to ever go bad, just pop it in the freezer.
  • Making pesto itself takes less than 5 minutes with minimal ingredients.

Ingredient notes

  • Pesto - this works with any pesto variety you have on hand. It works with other sauces as well.
  • You can use this method with other ingredients that may often go bad such as tomato paste, canned tomatoes, etc.

Step by step directions

1. Step one - Transfer the pesto to a silicone ice cube tray. I like this one, it freezes in small portions, about 2 tablespoons, which is great to add to soups.

2. Step two - Once frozen, transfer the cubes to a resealable freezer bag or airtight container. Label with the date so you can keep track of how long it’s been stored. Pesto can last up to 6 months in the freezer.

FAQ

Is it okay to freeze if my pesto has parmesan cheese in it?

Yes, the parmesan does not cause any problems when freezing.

Can I freeze this in different portions?

Absolutely, there are many different size trays available, just pick the one that works for you.

Thawing

Thaw frozen pesto cubes in the fridge, or drop them directly into warm pasta, soups, or sauces. They’ll melt quickly with a little heat.
