This air fryer French toast is the best of both worlds: crispy on the outside, yet soft and tender on the inside! The texture is absolutely amazing!
I'm a total skeptic when it comes to the air fryer, and I'll admit there have been a few recipes I thought were going to be gimmicky, but ended up knocking my socks off...air fryer grilled cheese for one, and corn on the cob for another. And this air fryer french toast is absolutely going on that list now!
THE TEXTURE. It's all about the texture here, guys. Soft and tender like normal french toast is, but those crisp edges, and let me be clear-- crisp, not dry or crunchy, or difficult to chew in any way. Holy moly.

Reasons you'll ♡ this recipe
- the texture is hands down impossible to beat- crisp on the edges, soft and tender on the inside
- you need very little oil
- we've provided instructions for cooking in both basket and oven-style air fryers

Watch the video below to see exactly how I prepped this air fryer french toast. It’s so easy! You can find more of my recipe videos on my YouTube channel, or on Facebook.
Ingredient notes
- bread- you can pretty much use your favorite bread here; I absolutely love the depth of flavor that sourdough gives, and that's what I used. Note that if you use thick cut or a boule, you will need to increase the cook time of your french toast
- milk- you can swap the dairy milk for non-dairy in this recipe with no problems
Step by step directions
1. Mix liquids- In a 9 x 9 inch baking dish, beat the eggs, then stir in the milk, vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg. Do your best to get the spices to dissolve, they won't completely.

2. Dredge the bread- dip the bread into the liquids, depending on how old your bread is, you may wish to allow it to soak for 30 seconds before flipping.
3. Cook- Preheat your air fryer to 400°F for 5 minutes. Spray the basket or tray with spray oil, then arrange the toast in a single layer. Cook for 5 minutes.
TIP- we tested this recipe in both a basket-style Cosori XL air fryer and a Instant Pot Vortex air fryer oven, and it worked well in both, however you need to pay special attention to the top rack in the air fryer oven; rotate racks and flip bread more frequently.
4. Flip- After 5 or so minutes, flip the toast over and cook for another 3-4 minutes, until golden on both sides.
TIP- all air fryers cook slightly differently, so it's a good idea to keep an eye on your toast during the last couple of minutes.
FAQ
Yes, if you don't spray or grease the air fryer, the french toast tends to stick. Alternatively, you could rub the basket (carefully to avoid burns) with some extra virgin olive oil on a paper towel.
Yes! Reheat at 350°F for 2-3 minutes, until warmed through and crisp.
It depends on your air fryer model; we were able to cook 4 slices at a time in our Cosori air fryer and 8 slices in the Vortex oven.
