This apple cider vinegar drink recipe is bubbly and refreshing, and an easy way to get the health benefits of apple cider vinegar into your diet.

Certain food trends get my inner scientist really curious; bone broth, adaptogens, and apple cider vinegar are all so intriguing!

We've all seen those health gurus promoting apple cider vinegar as some sort of miracle cure to all afflictions, right? If you are skeptical about it, you are not alone!

I was right there with you, but let me tell ya...this is part of my daily routine that I thoroughly enjoy and I have become a total believer in apple cider vinegar!

This simple drink is one that I started drinking a few years ago, and I really enjoy it! It seems to prevent me from getting those post-lunch energy lulls, suppresses my appetite in the evening, and is just generally an enjoyable part of my day.

Science backed health benefits of apple cider vinegar

As a former research scientist, I love it when there are peer reviewed articles on health trends that I can really dig into and try to pull fact from fiction. There are actually many articles backing the claims that apple cider vinegar benefits your health. Here are my favorite ones:

  • Prevented oxidative stress in obese rats- in a 2018 study, Ben Hmad Halima et al found that obese rats who were fed apple cider vinegar over 9 weeks showed reduced signs of oxidative stress , correlating with increased concentrations of antioxidant enzymes (including superoxide dismutase) as well as Vitamin E.
  • Reduced blood sugar spikes in diabetics after a meal- in a small 2004 study, it was found that consumption of apple cider vinegar before a meal suppressed blood sugar spikes in both type 2 diabetics and insulin-resistant individuals. This has since been followed up with multiple other studies.
  • Appetite suppression- in a 2014 study, Frost et al found that mice who were fed acetic acid (the chemical name for vinegar) consumed less food and gained less weight. The authors propose a direct role for acetic acid in suppressing appetite, though it's unclear exactly how this is achieved. This article was published in Nature Communications, which means it was rigorously reviewed before being published.

Ingredient notes

ingredients for apple cider vinegar detox drink
  • apple cider vinegar- make sure you select raw unfiltered apple cider vinegar that says 'with the mother'. This means you get the proteins, enzymes and helpful bacteria! Bragg's is a great brand, though my husband likes Kirkland brand.
  • organic lemon juice- we like a good quality brand that is not 'from concentrate'. Santa Cruz is our stand by!
  • soda water- we use a SodaStream

Step by step directions

pouring soda into a class for the apple cider vinegar drink recipe

1. Add cold soda water to a 2 cup or 1 pint glass.

2. Measure out 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar, and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice. Add it to the soda water, and stir to combine.

3. Enjoy immediately, and use a straw to protect your teeth from the apple cider vinegar.

FAQ

Which kind of apple cider vinegar should I use?

Make sure you use the organic, unfiltered apple cider vinegar (I use Bragg's's). It may also say 'with the mother'. This means that the proteins, enzymes and helpful bacteria are in the bottle, and it may have a cloudy appearance. Just give it a shake up before you use it and you're good to go! I've never tasted any weird texture from the mother.

Can you taste the apple cider vinegar?

A little bit. For me, I could smell it when I first started drinking this and I found that more off-putting than the actual taste. HOWEVER I got used to it really quickly, so give it a try! Using a straw also helps because then your nose isn't right in the drink 😉

Can I add sweetener?

Absolutely, when I first started drinking this apple cider vinegar drink, I added ¼ cup of cran-raspberry juice to it. This helps mask the apple cider vinegar flavor even more. Eventually I found I enjoyed the flavor even more without the cran-raspberry juice.

When should I drink this it?

It is 100% up to you! I either drink mine in the early afternoon if I feel low after lunch, or I drink it in the evening when I'm watching TV. I find it helps curb late-night TV munchies.

Can I drink it warm?

I have also enjoyed this drink with warm water (instead of the soda water). Pour over a few slices of fresh ginger and a cinnamon stick for a cozy drink.

Hi Sue, we use a Soda Stream for make-at-home carbonated water. You can also use your favorite brand of club soda if you prefer.

Hi Cecile! Yes, it should be the same effect. I can't say how many times a day you should drink it as I am not a nutritionist, but I personally drink it once a day.

Do you ever make a large amount instead of a single serving to make it easier on you? If so, how much and how often? Does the taste keep the same throughout the days it may last? I'm crazy busy and this would make it easier for me instead of a day to day serving especially since I purchase the gallon of apple cider vinegar and the mess would be less. Thank you, Stephanie.

Hi Tammy! I have never cooked with essential oils so unfortunately I really can't say.
